Billy, great blog. Please keep up the good work! John Glaser from COMPASS BOX here. Just wanted to clarify about our history in regard to SPICE TREE. It's a long, complicated story, and those interested in it (or searching for a sleep aid) can find the whole saga on our web site. We are always transparent about everything.

We started the SPICE TREE process years ago with flat barrel staves (made of the highest quality cooperage oak). Never used chips in barrels or tanks. (Although they could be useful in whisky as some are made of tremendously high quality oak, but that's another story.)

It wasn't that the SWA banned anything. They have there own interpretations of the law (about which we hold different interpreations) and they threatened to take us to court if we continued to sell SPICE TREE, on the basis that their interpretation is right. If we'd had the time and the money, we could have taken this to a judge. Our barrister was confident we would have prevailed. But, alas, we are a bit too small and poor to fight a goliath.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed the whisky, which is the main thing.
